Albert Gabriel Rigolot 1862-1932, French Oil on board, 34.5 cm x 24.5 cm
Albert Rigolot, a celebrated landscape artist, was born in Paris on 28 November 1862. He began his art studies at the Parisian School located in the 16th district on rue Singer. Shortly thereafter, he became a student of Leon Pelouse and Auguste Allonge’s. Rigolot exhibited his first work at the Paris Salon in 1886 and would continue to exhibit at the Salon for much of his career. Rigolot became a member of the “Societaire des Artistes Français” in 1888, and received a bronze medal in 1891, a silver medal in 1892 and in 1900 he won a gold metal at the Universal Exposition. He became a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1901. Rigolot is renowned for his water landscapes, ponds and riverbanks, as well as for his views of Algeria. His paintings are masterful renditions of luminous landscapes. He particularly enjoyed portraying riverscapes and landscape scenes. He shared the same philosophy of the Barbizon painters, rendering his oeuvre with a naturalistic approach, concentrating on the effects of light as it shined through the trees onto the riverbanks. He was also influenced by his association with the Society of French Orientalists.
His works have been displayed in museums in Nancy, Paris, and Saint-Quentin.
Rigolot died in Paris in 1932.
