Melbourne based artist John McQualter was born in 1949 and spent his childhood in the coastal towns of Portsea and Sorrento which has greatly influenced his work. John studied commerce at Melbourne University and attended evening painting classes under the direction of Mary Harris. In 1973 John became a full time professional artist and quickly established himself winning many awards. His works are immediately recognizable due to his style referred to as ‘romantic impressionism’ which is in the tradition of the 19th C French impressionists.
