George Feather Lawrence 1901-1981, Australian Oil on board, 59cm x 49cm.
Lawrence was born in Annandale, Sydney. He studied at the Julian Ashton Art School under Julian Ashton and Henry Gibbons and worked as a commercial artist. He was a member of the Northwood Group of painters in Sydney, which included Roland Wakelin, Lloyd Rees and John Santry. In 1948 he was elected Member of the Society of Artists. He also exhibited with the Contemporary Group. 1951-52 Painted and studied in London and Paris; Invited to show at an exhibition of European painters at Leicester Galleries, London. 1962 Commenced painting full-time. He travelled extensively in England, Europe and Australia, studying and gathering material for paintings. Awards 1949 Wynne Prize for landscape 1949 Crouch Prize, Ballarat 1950 Bendigo Art Prize His works are included in the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of New South Wales, National Gallery of Victoria, Queensland Art Gallery, Art Gallery of South Australia, Art Gallery of Western Australia, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Australian Embassies, Paris, Rome, San Francisco and Brazil, Auckland Art Gallery, Dunedin Art Gallery, National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, Numerous private collections in Australia, England, USA, France, Italy and Holland
